WEEKLY WISDOM 30/07/2012

Do not go after the past,
Nor lose yourself in the future.
For the past no longer exists,
And the future is not yet here.
By looking deeply at things just as they are,
In this moment, here and now,
The seeker lives calmly and freely.
You should be attentive today,
For waiting until tomorrow is too late.
Death can come and take us by surprise–
How can we gainsay it?
The one who knows
How to live attentively
Night and day
Is the one who knows
The best way to be independent.

WEEKLY WISDOM 23/07/2012

Only for his ruin
does renown come to the fool.
It ravages his bright fortune
& rips his head apart.

He would want unwarranted status,
preeminence among monks,
authority among monasteries,
homage from lay families.

WEEKLY WISDOM 16/07/2012

A man long absent
comes home safe from afar.
His kin, his friends, his companions,
delight in his return.

In just the same way,
when you’ve done good
& gone from this world
to the world beyond,
your good deeds receive you–
as kin, someone dear
come home.

– Dhammapada [16]

WEEKLY WISDOM 09/07/2012

Quivering, wavering,
hard to guard,
to hold in check:
the mind.
The sage makes it straight–
like a Fletcher,
the shaft of an arrow.

– Dhammapada [3]

WEEKLY WISDOM 01/07/2012

The whole world we travel with our thoughts,
Finding nowhere anyone as precious as one’s own self.
Since each and every person is so precious to themselves
Let the self-respecting harm no other being.
