WEEKLY WISDOM 30/12/2013

Having striven, brahmin,
cut the stream
Expel sensual passions.
Knowing the ending of fabrications,
brahmin,
you know the Unmade.

When the brahmin has gone
to the beyond of two things,
then all his fetters
go to their end–
he who knows.

WEEKLY WISDOM 23/12/2013

“Don’t go by gossip and rumour, nor by what’s told you by others, nor by what you hear said, nor even by the authority of your traditional teachings. Don’t go by reasoning, nor by inferring one thing from another, nor by argument about methods, nor from liking an opinion, nor from awe of the teacher and thinking he must be deferred to.

“Instead, Kalamas, when you know from within yourselves that certain teachings are not good, that when put into practice they lead to loss and suffering, you must then trust yourselves and reject them.”

– Anguttara Nikaya

WEEKLY WISDOM 16/12/2013

Everywhere, truly,
those of integrity
stand apart.
They, the good,
don’t chatter in hopes
of favour or gains.
When touched
now by pleasure, now pain,
the wise give no sign
of high or low.

– Dhammapada [6]

WEEKLY WISDOM 09/12/2013

Whose minds are well-developed
in the factors of self-awakening,
who delight in non-clinging,
relinquishing grasping–
resplendent,
their effluents ended:
they, in the world,
are Unbound.

– Dhammapada [6]

WEEKLY WISDOM 02/12/2013

Who will penetrate this earth
& this realm of death
with all its gods?
Who will ferret out
the well taught Dhamma,
as the skilful flower-arranger
the flower?

The learner-on-the-path
will penetrate this earth
& this realm of death
with all its gods.
The learner-on-the-path
will ferret out
the well taught Dhamma,
as the skilful flower-arranger
the flower.

– Dhammapada [4]
